Types of Home Thermostats: Figuring Out What You Need

Try typing in the search phrase, “thermostat reviews” in the search engine box and you’ll be given about nine million pages to go to. It’s actually safe to bet that nearly every American home has it. But because you’re reading this post, it means you probably want more information as to what really is this device capable of.

To be specific, a thermostat is a device used to guarantee the efficient use and function of your home’s HVAC system. In most instances, it serves as the on/off switch for both the heating system and the air conditioning system. But the original intention of the invention of the thermostat is to give the homeowner the flexibility to control the temperature inside the home. With its function of temperature control, it has effectively become a crucial component in the hope of saving energy at home.

In terms of how they operate, thermostats are classified into two different types. The two variants are called the line and low voltage types.

A line voltage thermostat has a simple mechanism particularly designed for single heating systems such as radiator and baseboard type systems. Its mechanism is very simple as the current will just flow through the thermostat and into the heater.

Meanwhile, the low voltage type of thermostat is more efficient and sophisticated in function, especially when the talk is about controlling the current of air. This is the variety being used in centralized HVAC systems. Aside from HVAC system, the same model of thermostat can also be installed to control electric unitary systems and water heating systems.

Wall Control Device Types

Once you’re done figuring out which variety to choose from based on the two mentioned earlier, the next step in your selection process is choosing the type of wall device.

No doubt the most popular type of wall device for thermostats is the programmable variety. The most obvious advantage of this type is that there is an automatic temperature adjustment based on pre-set times. It’s not like the other types because it gives the unique benefit of conserving energy while making sure the space inside remains comfortable.

But for those who don’t intend to pay extra for a programmable thermostat, the next best thing is the mechanical model. Its biggest advantage meanwhile is its price. The fact is the mechanism inside it is very simple and straightforward, which means you can even install it on your own. This device comes equipped with either vapor-filled bellows or bi-metallic strips that respond to changes in temperature inside. However, don’t expect a lot of fanciness from it since it can’t respond as fast compared to that of a programmable thermostat in terms of temperature adjustment.
